[additional ideas: Also, mention more specifically some of his miracles...turning water into wine, etc.]
Was Christ God or a man?
Sometimes when we think of Jesus, we might think...well, he did what he had to. He did what he was born to do. This is true to some extent. But I think we would be mistaken to think that Jesus didn't truly experience what it was to be a human. And indeed, some religions say that he was just a man. It's also becoming a popular idea in the world in general to assume the bible is not literally true and assume he was just a normal man.
He was tempted
He was humbled and obedient before God.
He died.
But there was something of God in him.
he could have "grasped equality with God" but he didn't while on the earth
Phil 2
5Your attitude should be the
same as that of Christ Jesus:
6Who,
being in very nature God,
did
not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
7but made himself nothing,
taking
the very nature of a servant,
being
made in human likeness.
8And being
found in appearance as a man,
he
humbled himself
and
became obedient to death--
even
death on a cross!
9Therefore God
exalted him to the highest place
and
gave him the name that is above every name,
10that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in
heaven and on earth and under the earth,
11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the
Father.
[Galatians 3:13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."]
He could have called twelve legions of angels to defend him rather than face crucifixion. This might have been one way in which he did not reach out to grasp equality with God while on the earth in the form of a man.
Mat 26
47While he was still
speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large
crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and
the elders of the people. 48Now the betrayer had arranged
a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him."
49Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings,
Rabbi!" and kissed him.
50Jesus replied, "Friend,
do what you came for."[4]
51Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and
arrested him. With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his
sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting
off his ear.
52"Put your sword back in its
place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will
die by the sword. 53Do you think I cannot call on my
Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve
legions of angels? 54But how then would the Scriptures be
fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"
55At
that time Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion,
that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day
I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56But
this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be
fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus did have miraculous powers

John 11
The Death of Lazarus
1Now
a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of
Mary and her sister Martha. 2This Mary, whose brother
Lazarus now lay sick, was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord
and wiped his feet with her hair. 3So the sisters sent
word to Jesus, "Lord, the one you love is sick."
4When
he heard this, Jesus said, "This sickness will not end in death.
No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through
it." 5Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
6Yet when he heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed where
he was two more days.
7Then he said to his disciples,
"Let us go back to Judea."
8"But
Rabbi," they said, "a short while ago the Jews tried to
stone you, and yet you are going back there?"
9Jesus
answered, "Are there not twelve hours of daylight? A man who
walks by day will not stumble, for he sees by this world's light.
10It is when he walks by night that he stumbles, for he
has no light."
11After he had said this, he went
on to tell them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am
going there to wake him up."
12His disciples
replied, "Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better." 13Jesus
had been speaking of his death, but his disciples thought he meant
natural sleep.
14So then he told them plainly,
"Lazarus is dead, 15and for your sake I am glad I was
not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."
16Then Thomas (called Didymus) said to the rest of the
disciples, "Let us also go, that we may die with him."
Jesus Comforts the Sisters
17On his
arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for
four days. 18Bethany was less than two miles[1]
from Jerusalem, 19and many Jews had come to Martha and
Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother. 20When
Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but
Mary stayed at home.
21"Lord," Martha said
to Jesus, "if you had been here, my brother would not have died.
22But I know that even now God will give you whatever you
ask."
23Jesus said to her, "Your brother
will rise again."
24Martha answered, "I know
he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."
25Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and
the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; 26and
whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe
this?"
27"Yes, Lord," she told him, "I
believe that you are the Christ,[2]
the Son of God, who was to come into the world."
28And
after she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary
aside. "The Teacher is here," she said, "and is asking
for you." 29When Mary heard this, she got up quickly
and went to him. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the
village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him. 31When
the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed
how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she
was going to the tomb to mourn there.
32When Mary
reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet
and said, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have
died."
33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews
who had come along with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in
spirit and troubled. 34"Where have you laid him?"
he asked.
"Come and see, Lord," they replied.
35Jesus
wept.
36Then the Jews said, "See how he loved
him!"
37But some of them said, "Could not he
who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"
Jesus Raises Lazarus From the Dead
38Jesus,
once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone
laid across the entrance. 39"Take away the stone,"
he said.
"But, Lord," said Martha, the sister of the
dead man, "by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been
there four days."
40Then Jesus said, "Did I
not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?"
41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus looked up
and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. 42I
knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the
people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me."
43When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,
"Lazarus, come out!" 44The dead man came out,
his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around
his face.
Jesus said to them, "Take off the grave clothes
and let him go."
Jesus had the power to raise Lazarus from the dead. He performed many other miracles such as turning water into wine and healing the blind that proved he had been sent from God and in fact, was the son of God.
Jesus talks about how he has come
from his father and would return to him.
John 16
17Some of his disciples said
to one another, "What does he mean by saying, 'In a little while
you will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see
me,' and 'Because I am going to the Father'?" 18They
kept asking, "What does he mean by 'a little while'? We don't
understand what he is saying."
19Jesus saw that
they wanted to ask him about this, so he said to them, "Are you
asking one another what I meant when I said, 'In a little while you
will see me no more, and then after a little while you will see me'?
20I tell you the truth, you will weep and mourn while the
world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy. 21A
woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but
when her baby is born she forgets the anguish because of her joy that
a child is born into the world. 22So with you: Now is your
time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no
one will take away your joy. 23In that day you will no
longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you
whatever you ask in my name. 24Until now you have not
asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy
will be complete.
25"Though I have been speaking
figuratively, a time is coming when I will no longer use this kind of
language but will tell you plainly about my Father. 26In
that day you will ask in my name. I am not saying that I will ask the
Father on your behalf. 27No, the Father himself loves you
because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28I
came from the Father and entered the world; now I am leaving the
world and going back to the Father."
29Then
Jesus' disciples said, "Now you are speaking clearly and without
figures of speech. 30Now we can see that you know all
things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you
questions. This makes us believe that you came from God."
31"You believe at last!" Jesus answered.
32"But a time is coming, and has come, when you will
be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet
I am not alone, for my Father is with me.
33"I
have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this
world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the
world."
Jesus was very stressed about what he was to go through. This does not seem to be a man who was free from troubles just because he had attained equality with God.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives
Luke 22
39Jesus went out
as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40On
reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not
fall into temptation." 41He withdrew about a stone's
throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42"Father,
if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours
be done." 43An angel from heaven appeared to him and
strengthened him. 44And being in anguish, he prayed more
earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the
ground.
[Imagine how troubled he must have been
to be sweating like drops of blood.]
45When he rose
from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep,
exhausted from sorrow. 46"Why are you sleeping?"
he asked them. "Get up and pray so that you will not fall into
temptation."
There are many ideas that are hard to get our minds around. If you think about infinity. What is infinity. If you go out into space an infinite number of miles, how far is that? It's as far as you can picture and five miles further than that. What would happen if you went infinitely fast? I dunno...maybe you'd be everywhere at once. Anyway, the idea of infinity is hard for us to grasp. It's needed for mathematics and a lot of applications...but if you try to think of it as something concrete, it's very hard.
In my mind, this is similar to thinking about Christ and who he was. He was equal with God and yet he took the form of a man at the same time.
Conclusion: While Jesus was equal with God, he experienced much lower lows than any of us have. So we can't say that he could never understand what it is to be a human. He was so amazing. He experienced the best and worst of existence.
